Trees and Shrubs
by DEREK FELL
Derek Fell's 'Trees and Shrubs' is one of the best books ever written on the subject. Whereas many books detail the many technical aspects of horticultural arts, very few books explain in simple, comprehensive terms precisely how to select, plant, maintain, and manage trees and shrubs in practical terms useful to the average home gardener.
Not long ago we noticed strange spots on the leaves of a favorite decorative crabapple tree. We consulted several horticultural reference books, but we could not identify the disease from the poor, hand-drawn illustrations (nor do we speak Latin, for that matter).
Then we opened Derek's book, and there on page 57 was a photograph showing exactly the condition afflicting the tree ("Cedar-Apple Rust") with instructions to rid the tree of the disease. Moreover, it explained this condition was caused by proximity to another shrub (Juniper), so we moved it — and it not only solved the problem, but helped to prevent reoccurrence.
This is just one example of how invaluable it is to have the right information at the right time. You don't need a degree from Cornell University to read and understand this book. Indeed, it is so well written that we often find ourselves getting lost in it. And no wonder — with information on more than 200 ornamental trees and shrubs, with more than 250 full-color photographs (taken by Derek himself), this beautiful book is pure pleasure to read and absorb.
'Trees and Shrubs' will show you how to grow beautiful plants that will add grace and value to your home. Select trees and shrubs by growth habit, landscape use, foliage and flower color. Find out which trees and shrubs are best for your climate. The book includes basics on soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, pruning, watering, pest and disease control, propagation and general maintenance. A full-color encyclopedia provides detailed descriptions and growing information for each plant listed.
About TREES AND SHRUBS
The following excerpt is from Derek's Introduction:
Trees and shrubs represent a vast group of plants from many climates. It is impossible to cover every aspect of their uses and needs in a single book. Some tree books are nature books, primarily intended for identification of individual wayside or forest trees. This is a garden book, and its intent is to satisfy three essential gardening needs:
- Ideas-suggestions for using various kinds of trees and shrubs in the landscape.
- Planting and care-practical information on how to grow and care for trees and shrubs.
- Recommendations via a detailed, illustrated encyclopedic listing of garden-worthy trees and shrubs, giving specific descriptions, growing information, and clear, understandable guidance in caring for trees and shrubs.
You can also view page excerpts from the book. What you will find is a well-organized and comprehensive visual guide to applying hands-on practices in your own garden or landscape. By presenting information visually through supportive reference text, Derek has produced a book that anyone can use.
However, this is more than a mere coffee table book (though it could easily serve as one). Derek has included a detailed Encyclopedia of Ornamental Trees and Shrubs. It even has a cross-reference index for those who do not know the Latin names of plants (i.e. most of us), making it easy to find what you're looking for. From Japanese Red Maples to Strawberry Trees to Rhododendrons to the most exotic species, it's all here!
The Chinese have a saying: "For a life of complete fulfillment, a person must do three things: write a book, have a child, and plant a tree." Few of us have the time or talent to write a book, and not everyone can be blessed with a child — but everyone can plant a tree.
There is also profound satisfaction in creating your own private landscape. You don't have to plant elaborate, expensive trees and shrubs — just select ones you like, and plant them in places that suit you. With a little planning and forethought, it will provide a lifetime of pleasure. Derek's book contains a special section devoted exclusively to planning, describing how to go about selecting exactly the right locations, and insuring they remain healthy for years to come.
For more serious gardeners, ornamental trees and shrubs can represent a significant investment of time and money. An ornamental Cypress was recently purchased from a Pennsylvania nursery for a private estate for $50,000.00. Most of us will never spend that much on a tree or shrub, but the point is clear: Any investment of your time and money is worth protecting.
Needless to say, Trees and Shrubs is a must-have addition to every home gardener's library. It also makes a great gift! Get your copy now by clicking on the Download button. Apply the wealth of knowledge presented in this book and take control of your garden landscape!
